Just a LIT-tle bit about everything... education, travel, books... and whatever else strikes my interests.
Tell me, teacher friends, do you feel like you've been stuck in a rut, doing the same old lessons and activities. Are you tired of hearing the same school or district professional development sessions pushing you to use collaborative grouping or transitioning your classroom from the "sage on the stage" to the "guide on the side." Do you find yourself wondering if you can make it through the year, month, week, or day? Have you wondered where the sparkle you had when you started teaching has gone? If you can identify with any of this, Ditch That Textbook by Matt Miller is for you. Ditch That Textbook is a quick and easy read. It has tons of suggestions about how to revamp your teaching that will be sure to inspire even your most boring lesson. The best part, use what you like and forget the rest. This book has inspired so many ideas for the upcoming school year, I can hardly imagine doing them all. I know, I know, I can hear you saying "But I have to follow what my district requires I use." Ok, so you can't do away with the book (or the state standards) completely. I get that. I teach an End-of-Course tested course. I teach in a school driven by those test scores. But that doesn't mean your students have to suffer through the same lecture you've been giving since the state last rewrote the standards. This book has inspired me to bring the sparkle of my student-teaching self back with the new and improved knowledge I have about what my students really need. This book is chock full of resources you can use in your classroom, and ideas on how to use them. I am looking forward to using what I've learned in this book in my classroom this year. The focus of the resources in this book are technology based and with the push in education to move into "paperless classrooms" and 1:1 technology, this book can set you up for success in adding technology into your room. In my most recent tangent, I have started scribbling ideas for how I can have my students create portfolio websites complete with student blogs. Although the idea is still in the early stages, I am psyched to see where this idea leads. I must lead by example, so I am going to work really hard to create a website my students and peers can use, and can see growth in. Here goes nothing! Happy Learning! Mrs. Lit 🔥
